Jason put an arm around his sister as they walked. "This is awesome. Our first full moon together. The pack is going to love you."
Jase grinned at her brother. "You're cheerful tonight."
"How could I not be?" Jason hugged her, "I'm in love."
The new lupa walked towards them, a wide smile on her face. "In love, Jason?" She blinked. "I did get your name right, right?"
“Yes, I'm Jason. And yes, I'm in love. Oh, this is my sister Jase. She's new."
"Hello." Jase went to properly greet her new lupa.
Mika completed the greeting, glad that Richard had gone over everything with her. "It's very nice to meet you. I'm Mika." She sighed, looking at Jason. "I'm sorry if I seem nosy. I'm not. I'm just... nervous."
"You're not nosy at all." Jason assured her as they entered the Lupanar. Jase was so nervous about telling the pack about what she could offer and that she'd already chosen a mate.
"Jase, don't be nervous." Mika took her hand and offered her a smile. "They're really nice here, and you're not the only new person. There's another man named Shayne joining us tonight."
"It's just that I'm not a normal wolf." She looked at Mika. "I can carry to full-term."
The Lupa's eyes widened. "How amazing. You're very lucky. I always wanted children, but after my attack..."
"I know. It's a great gift, but I've chosen a mate. He's not in the pack so I'm worried how they're going to take it." Jase said softly.
"We have no control over who our hearts love. If we did, it wouldn't hurt so much." Mika squeezed Jase's hand. "You have my support."
"Thank you so much, Mika. It's nice to have a friend in the pack."
"In and out of it." Spotting Richard across the crowd, Mika waved him over as she saw Jason talking to another blonde wolf. Stephen? "I'm new to the area, so I can use all the help I can get."
Richard walked over to meet them. "Hello, Jase. I see you've met Mika." He gave Mika a quick kiss. "Let's get this show on the rode."
"Indeed. I've not seen a pack this disorganized in a decade." A drawling voice sneered from behind them.
Mika gasped and turned, seeing the man standing there. He was about five foot ten, but something about him made him feel bigger, more menacing. His eyes were steel gray, eerily similar to his hair in color.
"A mute lupa. Quaint."
Richard glared at the man. "You are new here Shayne. You should watch your mouth and learn your place."
"Yes, Ulfric." Nothing about the acquiescence was out of line- it was even respectful. Somehow, though, it made a mockery of the words.
Richard went with Mika to the 'throne'. "We have two new members of the pack. Shayne and Jase. It's an honor to have Jase here. She is of a rare line of wolves that can carry children to full term." Jase hid behind Jason.
Shayne looked over the pack, his entire attitude cold. "Who is your Geri?"
"I am." Sylvie answered, stepping forward. This Shayne was not the sort she approved of, and she could tell he would throw things out of balance.
"I challenge you."
Mika gasped. Jase's gift had hardly been announced! What was he doing?!
"What is wrong with you?" Richard shouted at him. "You have overstepped your bounds. If you want to challenge Sylvie you have to go through the ranks for."
Shayne ignored his anger. "Fine. I challenge anyone willing to fight me." His eyes lit on the Lupa with a smirk, then Jase. "Though I find it amusing that you would take in a bitch who behaves more like a cat in heat- after all, she's fucking a leopard."
Jason clenched his hands. "How dare you talk about my sister like that." He felt his wolf rising in anger,
"Jason, no. He's not worth it." She knew Shayne was stronger than Jason. She didn't want her brother to get hurt because of her.
The pack grumbled with dissent, and Mika stepped forward. "Anyone unhappy with Jase's choice can go through me. I support her, and she has my backing." The pack seemed to grumble a bit more. "Jase is here because she is pack. Just because she can carry to term does not mean that she must be a brood mare for us. She is her own person, and I will not let you take her will from her."
"And the Lupa doesn't know her place either." Shayne clucked, stepping up in Mika's face. "Or are you a whore too? Like attracts like, after all..."
"Fuck you." Jase said. "I'm not a whore, you low life scum bag." She shook with rage. "I will take your challenge."
"Jase, no!" Jason called out but Jase was already on the guy. Mika was the first friend she'd made and she was their lupa. She’d grown up in a pack where talking to the lupa like that just didn't fly.
Richard was about to yell at Shayne when Jase attacked him. The guy was being an ass. He just hoped Jase could hold her own.
Shayne laughed as Jase rose to his bait. With a growl, he pushed her back, only to have her come at him again. IT seemed the little bitch wasn't going to be as easy to beat as he first thought.
Mika looked on with worried eyes, then back up to Richard. "Can't you do something?"
"Jase accepted his open challenge. My hands are tied." Richard told her softly.
Jase tackled him to the ground. She was a lot stronger than what she looked. She'd taken on her ulfric, she could beat this piece of shit.
Shayne growled yet again as his hands bloomed into claws and he struggled to flip her, his eyes glowing. He punched her hard in the stomach in an attempt to get her off. Jase growled as she began to shift.
The pack watched as Shayne raked his claws over her breast, as if going for the heart, and blood spilled forth.
Jase stop shifting. She'd done what few could, take one a half shape shifter form. She bit down his arm. Her stomach hurt. She could feel wetness gathering between her legs.
Mika grabbed Richard's hand. Jase had clearly broken his arm when Shayne finally gave in and submitted.
Jase looked down at him. "You talk shit about Mika again and I'll kill you. I don’t know what your last pack was like, here you don't disrespect your ulfric and lupa." She leaned in as she shifted back to human form. "If I'm this strong image how strong our lupa is." She whispered so only he could hear her. She hoped that would deter him from doing this again.
Shayne glared at her, pushing her away as he hauled himself to his feet, his arm hanging at his side.
Jase sat there for a moment. Something was wrong. She felt..ill. Jason knelt beside her. "You okay?"
"I need to go to the shifter hospital." She said seeing the blood between her legs.
Mika hurried down from the throne to Jase's side. "Richard, call Lillian's! I'm taking Jase out of her." She looked at Jason. "Get her to my car. I'll drive."
Richard grabbed his cell phone and made the call as Jason picked his sister up. "Hold on Jase. It'll be okay." He'd failed her again. He went as fast as he could to Mika's car.
Mika waited until they were both in the back seat before taking off. "Jason- take off your shirt and press it between her thighs, alright?" Glancing right and left as she approached a red light, Mika made sure there was no traffic coming before blowing through it.
"Jase, sweetie... is there any chance you're pregnant? At all?"
"Shh... You need to calm down, honey. Alright? The added stress is going to make it worse. We'll be there in five minutes." Mika bit her lip hard, remembering how many times Tabitha, Greylen's wife had miscarried. Out of the four, she'd been with her three times.
Jason tried to comfort his sister, but she was crying. He never did well when she cried. "I can't calm down. It hurts, Mika. Nathaniel..." She sobbed.
"Tell me about Nathaniel, alright? How'd you meet him?" She fought to keep her voice from shaking, only guessing that this was her new friend's mate.
"He picked me up at the airport because Jason had to work." She tried to think through it all. She's lost their child, hers and Nathaniel’s. She cried harder. "I lost his baby. How am I going to tell him?"
"Sshh... He'll be more worried about you, hun. Now I'm going to tell you about my niece and nephew, alright? And there will be a quiz when you're better, so listen up." Mika battled for calm as she was forced to stop at a light. "There's Elias Darien- he's in Richard's class and got into trouble just so he and I could meet. He was born on August second. His little sister's name is Rissa. Her favorite color is purple, and she wants a puppy so bad it's not even funny."
"Why don't you get her a puppy then?" She managed to blink through some of the tears and looked at her brother. Jason squeezed her hand and prayed that she would be okay."
"Well, I'm scared the puppy won't like me because I'm a wolf. Rissa doesn't know about that yet, because she doesn't understand how important it is not to tell some secrets yet." Mika turned into the hospital, seeing Lillian waiting outside.
"Just let her get a puppy. It'll learn it's place. Our dogs always did." Jase felt the car stop. She heard Jason say "We're here.” Jase moaned. "Mika." She cried softly.
Mika climbed from the car, going around to help Jase out. Kissing her forehead, Mika lifted her from the car. "Sshh sweetie. And if I get her a puppy, you're coming with me to get it."
"Ok." She said softly. Jason helped Mika get her inside. "We think she miscarried." Jason told Dr. Lillian. The doctor looked her over.
"She's pretty bad. Jason wait in the waiting room." She said she started to cut Jase's clothes off.
Mika took Jase's hand, ignoring the blood. "She wants a big white and black mutt though... I don't know where to find one." The Lupa stroked her hair, trying to sooth the other woman.
Jase was shaking. "The pound is a good place to look. We can look online so the dogs don't get all stirred up looking for a puppy." Dr. Lillian looked at Mika. She would need the woman's help.
Jase closed her eyes as Lillian began to remove the rest of the fetus. Jase couldn't think of it as a baby or she'd go insane. It hurt like hell, but Mika held her hand through it all. Lillian finally finished up. "You did well, Jase." The older woman squeezed her hand. "The wound on your chest is doing nicely, so you can go home in a few hours. Nathaniel's here by the way. I heard him come in a while ago. Shall I send him in?"
Jase shook her head. She couldn't bear to see him right now. She just wanted to be alone.
Mika stroked Jase's hair again. "It'll be alright, Jase."
"No, it won't." She couldn't stop the tears from falling. "Mika, I just want to be alone for a bit." Dr. Lillian had explained that because she and Nathaniel were both shifters, she had a higher chance of a fast pregnancy. Weres could take after their animal counterparts when it came to how long the pregnancy had lasted. She would have had her baby in a month or so rather than nine months.
Squeezing her eyes shut, Mika leaned down and kissed the other woman's cheek. "I'm sorry, Jase." She turned, heading for the door. This... was her fault.
Jase rolled over onto her side and cried. She knew how the other woman in the pack felt. To have such life in you and then for it to be gone. She shouldn't have attacked Shayne. It was stupid and now she was paying the price.
Jason stood up as Mika entered the room. "Dr. Lillian said she was okay, but is she really?"
Mika rubbed a tired hand over her face. "She's... physically fine. Emotionally, she's really devastated." She looked at the auburn haired man sitting behind Jason, noting the broken look on his face.
"I'm... I'm sorry, Jason..." Tears trembled in his over bright violet eyes, and a sob ripped through him.
Jason put an arm around Nathaniel. "It'll be okay. We'll get though this." He looked at Mika. It killed him to see Nathaniel like this. He was his best friend. He could only image how Jase must feel.
Glancing at the clock, Mika blinked back her own tears. "I need to get home. Call me, at any time if you guys need me- feel free to come over too, alright?"
"Thanks, Mika, but I think we're going to start here until Jase can leave." He hugged Nathaniel. He wished Caleb was here. He felt so lost. He'd failed his sister and his best friend. He should have stopped her or taken Shayne on himself.
Caleb brushed past a wolf as he made his way into the hospital, stopping at the desk. "Hello, I'm looking for Jase Schuyler. She was-" He froze as he caught his mates scent, spotting Jason further along the hall. "Never mind." He told the receptionist as he hurried ahead. Nathaniel was shaking in Jason's arms, making himself as small as possible.
Jason had his face pushed against Nathaniel's neck. He would not cry. He would not! Shit, he was crying. This wasn't going to help Nathaniel at all. He caught Caleb's scent and looked up. "Caleb."
The burnette crouched in front of them, rubbing Nathaniel's back as he reached up, rubbing Jason's tears away wordlessly.
A few hours passed. Jason was now snuggled up to Caleb. Nathaniel had fallen into an uneasy sleep.
Dr. Lillian came in. She looked worried. "What's wrong?" Jason sat up.
"Jase is gone." The doctor said softly.
"Gone? Like she left?'' Jason stood up quickly. "Nathaniel wake up." He gently shook his friend. He knew Jase. When something hurt she likes to leave it alone for a while, but to leave the hospital?
Nathaniel blinked his eyes open, the purple more bruised looking than anything. "What's wrong?"
Caleb bit his lip, unsure of what to do.
"Jase left the hospital." He felt a pain in his heart. His sister was gone.
The leopard stared for a moment, then stood. "Where would she go, Jason?"
"I don't know, Nathaniel." He was near tears again. "Dr. Lillian said she grabbed some spare clothes they have and left."
Caleb wrapped his arms around Jason, hoping to calm the wolf.
Nathaniel growled. "Then we find her. I'll look at her place- you two look anywhere else that you can think of, got it?" His take charge attitude was a little shocking, but this was his mate!
Jason stumbled back. He wasn't used to Nathaniel being so demanding. "Let's go Caleb." He said and they took off for the car.
Nathaniel reached Jase's house in record time from the hospital, shoving the car into park and jerking the keys from the ignition by the time he was half out of the car. He sniffed the air, and caught the scent of his mate in the air, recent. His eyes flashed, and he hurried to the front door.
Jase had her kneels pulled up against her chest. She'd taken a cab home so she could be alone. Now, she lay curled up on her bed, crying softly.
“Jase...."
She stiffened as she heard Nathaniel call her name. She whimpered. She wasn't ready to see him yet. She couldn't handle it yet. She buried her face in her pillows.
He moved from the doorway, kneeling before her. "Just listen to me- don't talk, alright?" Nathaniel bit his lip. "I'm not going to lie. I am angry. But not with you." He reached out, rubbing her back. "With myself. You're my mate. It's up to me to protect you and any children we might have and I've already failed when we've just begun. I understand that you don't want to talk with me any more or... be with me anymore, now that you see how weak I am, but I'll always be there if you want me or need me for anything. I swear I'll do my best to protect you and anyone you call yours, even if I'm not your mate. I love you."
Jase looked up at him. She couldn't find the words to speak, she was so choked up, but she didn't want Nathaniel to leave her. She loved him It was her fault she'd lost the baby. "Nathaniel." She whimpered. She grabbed his hand and pulled him down beside her.
He pulled her into his lap, holding her as close as possible as he started to cry, rocking her. "I'm so sorry, Jase..."
"I love you. Don't leave me." She grabbed a handful of his hair so he couldn't move. "Don't leave me. It's my fault. I shouldn't have challenged him. I should have left it to Richard." She buried her face in his neck. "I'm the one who's sorry."
"Sssh.... it's alright, Baby. I won't leave you unless you want me to... and maybe not even then." Nathaniel hugged her closer, rubbing her back. "And it's not your fault, Jase... so don't think it is. You couldn't have known what was going to happen."
Jase's tears began to drip onto Nathaniel's neck. "I shouldn't have fought him. I lost control again. I wasn't thinking."
"What happened?" He asked softly, his hands soothing her.
"Before, I killed my old pack's ulfric. He was cruel. He raped me in front of the entire pack." Her words were emotionless. "So I killed him. Tonight, I hated that Shayne talked that way to Mika. I wanted to put him in his place."
Nathaniel shook, hiding his face in her neck. "It's okay, Baby..."
Jase wrapped her arms around him. She never wanted him to let her go. She felt safe when she was with him.
He reached in his pocket and grabbed his cell phone. Time to let Jason know he'd found Jase.
Jason grabbed his phone. "Hello? Nate, did you find her?" His voice was full of worry.
"Yeah. We're at home." Nathaniel paused. "We're alright for a while, okay? I think we need to be alone."
"Yeah, of course. Caleb and I will head home then. Give me a call tomorrow. Bye." She said and hung up. He was relieved. "Jase is okay."
"I'm glad." Caleb sighed, rubbing at his forehead as he turned around, heading back to the circus.
Jason closed his eyes. This day had been very tiring. He fell asleep before the reached the Circus.
Parking quietly, Caleb unlocked Jason's door and carefully pulled him from the car, trying not to wake him. Locking it up, he headed inside towards their rooms.
"I can walk." Jason mumbled, still mostly asleep. He snuggled up to Caleb's warmth.
"I was trying to get you inside without waking you up, Hun." Caleb kissed Jason's temple, trying to open their door.
Jason grabbed the door handle. How funny Caleb must look caring him in his arms like that. Jason smiled.
"Thanks, Pup." They made it into the bedroom, and Caleb set him on the bed. "You going to go back to sleep, love?"
Jason nodded. He could barely keep his eyes open. "Come sleep with me."
"Of course." Caleb stripped down, and climbed into bed, wrapping himself around his mate. "I love you, Jason."
"Love you, too." He was already half asleep.
