Somewhere Far Away the Sky Cries Out in Thunder
Somewhere far away the sky cries out in thunder.
But here on my porch by the sea
It's nothing more than a distant rumbling
-- from the same poem as the above, by Terry Moore.
When the gryphon landed it took Iceshadow's arms locking around him to keep Starblade from running out the door. Took the full weight of the other Elder to bring both of them hard to their knees to let the pain shoot through enough for Starblade to remember why he shouldn't leave the safety of the Apprentice's workshop.
He understood it. He had no obligation to enjoy it.
And when he saw the newly healed gryphon leaving with the healer... the battle was over. They'd won it. Starblade knew the war was far from over, but this battle was and the gryphon was bringing the healer. Injured did not mean death. It meant there were people alive who needed help.
"Darkwind," Starblade gasped, turning with some difficulty in the vice-grip Iceshadow held around his chest and arms. "Please, I have to know." And his old friend looked at him with sympathy in his eyes but the muscle-tension in the arms restraining him was implacable. Starblade felt a sob well in his chest but gulped it back down. "Please... please, I just need to know."
Iceshadow did not let go, but restraint became embrace and Starblade felt his attention turn away a little. Rainlance turned to look at them through the open door and Iceshadow shared his answer. "They all live." Relief made Starblade sag against the other Adept. Darkwind lived. That's what he cared for. He had never doubted that this skirmish would not end in the Changechild Adept's death. That monster was too strong for that. But knowing now that Darkwind was alive, would heal, and even had lost none of his friends and allies--that was all he needed.
Iceshadow helped him to his feet and over to the bed they'd set up for Starblade's extended stay in the work area. He murmured words of comfort as well as practicalities of continued healing and duties to attend in the Vale. Starblade nodded absently through a soggy smile. His son was alive. Everything else could stand to wait. Including him.
