The plan was set. As far as Charlie was concerned, Bella was staying with Alice for a few days to keep her company while the rest of the Cullens went camping. Billy was doing his part by taking Charlie fishing and then watching the game at La Push. A few of the younger wolves were staying behind to make sure they were protected.
Bella was actually going to be staying with Edward while the others went hunting. She’d gotten Edward to agree to stay out of the fight. She felt bad about it as soon as he’d agreed, but she couldn’t bear the thought of him being in danger with the rest of her future family.
Jacob picked her up, telling Charlie he was going over there anyway to say goodbye to Liam. Bella was quiet for most of the ride, staring blankly out the window. “Don’t worry so much, Bells,” Jacob tried to reassure her. “You underestimate us way too much.”
“It’s not that,” Bella sighed.
“Then what is it?”
Bella bit her lip and turned to face her friend. “I guess it’s safe to assume that you and Liam have....” She didn’t know quite how to put the words.
Jacob blushed. “Bells, I really don’t think I should be talking about that with you.”
“But we’re friends, aren’t we? And there are things I want to know.”
“Can’t you ask Edward?”
Bella shook her head. “No, he’s being stubborn about that subject. That, and only you can answer some of my questions.”
Jacob was quiet for a moment. It was still an uncomfortable topic for him. While he and Liam couldn’t keep their hands off each other, it was still hard to talk about it. “Then I guess I’ll try to answer your questions.”
Bella smiled in triumph. “Well, I guess my first question is about Edward’s concern. He says he could hurt me. Has Liam hurt you by accident?”
“Yes,” Jacob answered truthfully. “And Edward is right to be worried. Bella, I’m not nearly as breakable as you. Liam has gotten a little too rough and hurt me, but I’m sturdy and I heal fast.”
“And I bet because of that, he doesn’t hold back as much as he could,” Bella argued.
“Probably not.” Jacob frowned. As much as he didn’t want to encourage her, he didn’t want to lie to her either. “But still, it’s easy to get caught up in the moment. I have, but Liam isn’t very breakable either. That’s what’s good about us; neither of us has to worry.”
“Well, Edward has always been careful with me.”
“What brought this on, anyway?” Jacob asked out of curiousity.
“Everyone keeps telling me there are a few human experiences I shouldn’t miss out on. I decided that was one of them.”
Jacob clenched his jaw, but didn’t argue with her. “Yeah, but don’t you think you should have that experience with another human?” While he hated that she was still hell-bent on becoming one of the undead, he also knew fighting over it with her wasn’t going to change her mind. He was going to have to leave the task to Liam.
“I would agree with you, except there aren’t any humans I’m interested in. Do you want me to go out and just pick a random guy?”
“No,” Jacob sighed. “I wouldn’t want you to do that.”
He was a little relieved when they pulled into the Cullens’ driveway. Edward was waiting for them on the porch, and in the blink of an eye he’d moved to open Bella’s door for her. “Thanks for bringing her.” Edward gave Jacob a half-smile.
“No problem. Good luck,” Jacob answered, and he sped back down the driveway as soon as Bella got all her things. As rude as it was, he didn’t want Edward reading his mind. He wanted the vampire to be surprised by Bella’s advances. He wasn’t worried either. Edward was stubborn enough that even if he did give in, it wouldn’t be tonight.
The Cullens returned around noon the next day. Bella was in a less than cheerful mood, and one of the reasons was because she hadn’t gotten her way. Alice was more than a little frustrated because the werewolves’ involvement was blocking her vision. She couldn’t foresee how everything was going to turn out. She was also hurt because one of the visions she had gotten involved Bella and Edward getting engaged and running off to Vegas. She felt a little better when Edward told her the wedding hadn’t happened yet.
The others were stoic and whispering back and forth amongst themselves. It wouldn’t be long now. Edward left Bella to deal with Alice while he packed up the camping gear. “Maybe we should pick a new camping spot for you two,” Liam said, gazing up at the sky. Directly above them the sun was shining weakly, but heavy darkness could be seen off in the distance.
“Too late now,” Edward answered. “I’ll just bring a heavy coat and lots of blankets for her.”
“Suit yourself.” Liam shrugged. “Jacob will be waiting for us in the clearing.”
“I’m surprised you two aren’t getting one last screw in,” Edward teased.
“We’re saving that for the victory celebration.” Liam stuck his tongue out. “Oh, but plans have changed a little. Bella, Jasper, and I were talking, and since we can’t have you there, we’ve decided on the next best thing.”
“Anything I can do to help,” Bella responded.
“Good. Since Edward is carrying all the camping supplies, hop on my back.”
Bella did as she was told, and the two vampires took off to where they knew the newborns would catch Bella’s scent. Then they began walking to the clearing to lead the newborns there. Both Edward and Liam stayed far enough away from Bella to keep their scents from mixing. “So, what’s this plan of yours?” Edward asked.
“She’s going to leave a little blood behind,” Liam answered. “Don’t worry, it won’t be much,” he added quickly. “And I brought a first aid kit to clean her up and everything.”
“I think it sounds like a great idea,” Bella chimed in. “That’ll drive them crazy. It’s like that story Billy told about the spirit warrior’s wife sacrificing herself.”
“That’s the general idea.” Liam nodded. “Except all you’ll have to suffer is a little cut.”
Edward didn’t like the plan, but he couldn’t argue from a logical standpoint. The newborns would definitely go crazy over the scent of Bella’s blood. The only downside was the distraction it might cause his family, though they could probably handle it. The only one who had lost it at Bella’s party last year was Jasper.
When they stepped into the clearing Bella turned toward Liam and held out her hand. He took a rather sharp-looking knife out of his pocket and took her hand in his with surprising gentleness. “Look at me,” he instructed, having heard how bad Bella was with blood.
She looked into his eyes. She expected them to be mesmerizing, but she saw something else. They looked different somehow; faceted, like a well-polished jewel. “Are those flecks of purple?” she asked. She was so entranced she didn’t feel the shallow cut.
Liam quickly looked away. “You’re seeing things. Go touch anything and everything before you clot.”
Bella obeyed again, but she couldn’t get what she’d seen out of her mind. She kept her gaze away from her bleeding hand while she touched every tree that lined the clearing. Jacob arrived when she was nearly finished. “You guys picked a bad night for camping,” he greeted them.
“We didn’t exactly pick it,” Edward scowled. He was worried enough about Bella already.
“I know,” Jacob sighed. “Hey, what’s Bella doing?”
“Fighting dirty,” Liam answered, leaning up to nip at Jacob’s neck.
Jacob chuckled. “How’d I know you’d pull something like that?”
“Because you know me so well,” Liam laughed. “Though Jasper helped come up with this one.” He pulled a first aid kit and a bottle of water out of one of the bags and went to bandage Bella up. “Well, that’s the end of my part. Have fun camping.”
“We will.” Jacob nodded.
“Wait, who said you were staying?” Edward frowned.
“I did,” Jacob answered. “Seth will join you in the morning so you’ll have a link to the pack. I’m taking the night shift.”
Edward took a step toward Jacob. “I can protect her just fine. She is my fiancée, after all.”
Jacob glanced at Bella, who looked rather upset at the use of the word. “And she’s my friend.”
“Will both of you stop it?” Bella shouted. “I thought all of this macho crap was going to end now.”
“Yes, that’s enough children,” Liam interrupted. “Am I going to have to come along?”
“No,” Edward sighed. “I just…never mind.” Liam affectionately brushed a few hairs out of Jacob’s face and hugged him before taking off. Edward handed Jacob a map with their campsite circled in red. “This is where we’re going. Give me a five-minute head start and I’ll meet you there.” Then Edward made sure he had everything before he, too, left.
Jacob turned to Bella. “Engaged, huh? Does that mean what I think it does?”
Bella’s face turned bright red. “Not exactly. I have to marry him first.”
Jacob shook his head. “I can’t believe you agreed to that.”
“I can’t either,” Bella mumbled. “I’ve never been out-stubborned before.”
“Maybe you should start listening to what everyone is telling you.”
“Don’t you start that again. You aren’t after me anymore, though I still wonder how and why you did a complete one-eighty.”
Jacob scooped Bella up into his arms and headed in the direction of the campsite. “Who says I did? Maybe I have eclectic tastes.”
“You never said anything about it before.”
“Why would I? First we were only friends, then I liked you. I had a little crush on Sam once, but that was a while ago; before he changed.”
Bella looked at Jacob like he was a whole new person. It was funny how you could be so close to someone and find there was so much you didn’t know about them. “Keeping any more secrets from me?”
“No, no secrets, just answers to questions you haven’t asked me yet. Man, I’ve never seen the forest this quiet before.”
Bella paused and listened carefully. Jacob was right, all was dead silent. There weren’t even any birds chirping in the treetops. In a way, it seemed fitting. As they climbed the mountain the light breeze turned colder and more persistent. The darkness that had been off in the distance was closing in fast. Light snowflakes were beginning to fall by the time Jacob picked up Edward’s scent.
Bella snuggled closer, enjoying Jacob’s warmth. Edward couldn’t keep her warm like this. It made her think about the time when Edward had been gone. She’d been thinking about being with Jacob, but then Edward had come back to her, and she’d leapt into his arms. Now Jake was taken, and from the looks of things there was no chance of him ever being available again.
By the time they reached the campsite Edward had already set up and was pacing back and forth. “There you are!” he cried out in relief. “Let’s get you inside.”
They ushered Bella inside the tent, which was pitched against the cliff face. “I hope you have room for two in that sleeping bag,” Jacob commented.
“No!” Edward growled.
“Relax, I’m practically family,” Jacob said as he entered the tent and zipped up the entrance behind him. “I’m into insatiable psychotic blonds now.”
Edward glared at the werewolf. “Somehow I don’t completely trust you.”
Jacob laughed and made himself comfortable on the floor. “I’ve imprinted. In case Bella hasn’t shared the information with you, I have no choice in the matter anymore, but it doesn’t bother me. He actually is perfect for me.”
Bella wrapped herself up in the sleeping bag, still fully dressed. The inside of the tent was already chilly, so she couldn’t help but wonder what the night would bring. “Is anyone watching Forks tonight?” she asked, a bit worried that some of the newborns might show up early or something.
“Carlisle, Liam, and Sam,” Jacob answered. “So don’t worry. Charlie couldn’t be safer.”
“I know why you were all listening to Jasper, but why does everyone have so much faith in Liam?” Bella voiced something that had been on her mind.
Edward looked to Jacob. “You’re the story teller.”
Jacob rolled his eyes and scooted closer to Bella. “I guess no one ever told you why Rudolfo wanted Liam so badly. Well, you know how the Romans had the Coliseum?” Bella nodded. “The Volturi had their own version. They would make newborns and pit them against each other.”
Bella cringed. “You mean they got their jollies from watching newborns tear each other apart? That’s…that’s disgusting!”
“That’s blood suckers for you. Well, most of them anyway. When Carlisle joined them Rudolfo wasn’t doing so hot. He was losing to his brothers a lot. Then Carlisle told Rudolfo about his theories. Carlisle also talked about his brother a lot, probably because he missed him. Bells, Rudolfo wanted to create a monster, and Liam seemed like the perfect candidate. You’ve seen the scars on Liam’s back. Normally scars would heal when you’re changed, but his were too deep. That should tell you something. Their dad almost killed Liam a few times, but no matter what the son of a bitch did, Liam never broke. He kept coming back for more.”
Bella swallowed hard. “And I guess he did well in these fights?”
“They’re always to the death,” Edward interrupted. “So, yeah. It’s getting late; you should try and get some sleep.”
Bella nodded and curled into a tight little ball. Mother Nature had other plans for the evening though. The snow began pounding the little tent and Bella couldn’t get warm no matter what she tried. Edward huddled in a corner, as far away from Bella as he could get.
“This is insane,” Jacob mumbled to himself after a while, and he began to strip down to his underwear.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Edward demanded.
“Saving her life. Look, I know you wish you could be the one to help her, but you can’t. I’m not going to let your jealousy kill her.”
Edward snorted but didn’t argue any further. His granite body tensed while he watched a mostly naked Jacob slip into the sleeping bag with Bella. She began to relax almost instantly. “Could you at least keep your thoughts down?” Edward snapped. “I thought you were only into insatiable psychotic blonds.”
Jacob shot Edward a dirty look. “Oh, yeah, like I can control what I’m thinking. Here’s a thought: don’t listen to what’s in my head.”
Edward huffed. “I don’t see how this is ever going to work.”
“How what’s going to work? You’re going to have to communicate verbally because I can’t read minds.”
“Both Bella and Liam want us to get along, but I don’t see how we can. There’s too much history. Plus, who the hell knows what my evil uncle is plotting? It’s no secret you both want Bella to stay human.”
Jacob propped his head up on his elbow. “And what are your thoughts on the matter?”
Edward raised an eyebrow. “Are we sharing our feelings now?”
Jacob shrugged. “We have all night. What’s wrong with doing a little male bonding for the people we love?”
Edward couldn’t help but laugh. “First I wanted to kill you, now I’m bonding with you….”
Jacob smirked. “Fate has a funny sense of humor, doesn’t it? Now, come on, I asked you a question. Don’t worry, she’s fast asleep.”
Edward let out a deep sigh. “Fine. I would prefer she stayed human, but she obviously doesn’t want to. I was just going to stay with her for the rest of her life, but just look at what’s happening. She’s never safe. And leaving her obviously didn’t work out well.”
“No, it didn’t. But what if there was a way you could become human? Would you?”
Edward thought about it for a moment. “Maybe, if that’s what she wanted. You’ll have to convince Bella that growing older isn’t such a bad thing, though.”
Jacob laughed. “I don’t think I’m the right person for that job. She seemed a little upset when I told her I won’t age as long as there are vampires around.”
“So as long as you’re with Liam, he won’t be losing you again any time soon?”
“No, it doesn’t look like it.”
“Maybe you should get some sleep too, then. We wouldn’t want a tired werewolf on the battlefield.”
“Maybe you’re right,” Jacob agreed. “But stay out of my dreams.”
“Believe me, I’ll try,” Edward retorted.
