Chapter 3
"Julie, Julie wake up!" The voice was familiar. Probably because this was the same voice that used to wake me up on days my alarm clock wouldn't work when I was a teenager. Old habits die hard. Which was why I had a silver dagger, the one I sleep with under the pillow, raised when I got up to find Jason.
Yes, I did say silver dagger. You see silver, sunlight, and holy objects ain't got nothing on me except for the fact that silver sometimes gives me a bit of a rash and I need to have sunglasses in the sun to protect my eyes. Of course with that I have a few weaknesses. One I'm weaker in strength when it comes to lycanthropes and vampires but against the strongest human bodybuilder, I win hands down. Knives, daggers, swords, glass, other sharp objects, and ripping out body parts won't kill me. Neither will poison and disease. It would be too slow so my super healing could save me. But something fast and quick like a bullet, lead or silver, to the head or heart and I die like a human. Put the bullet in somewhere not so vital, and I will be fine. In pain but alive. Sorry for the pessimist attitude, but I'm not Miss Sunshine in the morning or at least when I wake up.
"By God, Jason, I almost cut your ear off."
Jason grinned at me. "I could always grow another one."
"I need my sleep, you know. I must have only gotten a few hours." I growled as I looked at the clock. It was about 12:00 A.M.
"Try a whole day. It's Saturday midnight or early Sunday morning, depending on how you look at it. You going to put that down?" He asked nodding to the dagger.
I dropped it onto the bed as I sat down. See I can reasonable after waking up. "So, Jason, why are you here?"
"I'm not the only here right now. Besides we're just visiting."
"Uh huh." I got out a pair of new dark blue jeans and a violet tank top, and started changing out of yesterday's olive halter top and black skirt. Yes, in front of Jason for two reasons. In order to get to the bathroom I would have to get out of my bedroom, pass the living room, and since Jason wasn't the only one here, they were probably in the living room. You get the picture once you add a woman after a hangover. Second, as Jason had pointed out to me in my teens, he had baby-sat me since I was a baby so there was nothing he hadn't seen. "Ri-ight."
"You don't believe me?" Jason widened his eyes and pouted teasingly. Even in early 40's he still sort of looked cute when he did that. Maybe being a werewolf stopped aging a bit. His hair was greying ever so slightly.
I started to brush my hair, which is black, slightly curly with natural streak of honey brown here and there, to smooth it out of yesterday nighhanghangover. Except one thing, last year I had dyed it, well, tinted it sapphire/cobalt blue because my hairstylist said it would match my eyes. Not to mention the fact that I had my hair permed straight and cut half an inch off my shoulders. I needed a change. Not permanently of course, since the tint was starting to come out. My hair had also grown out since I tinted it, now a little past shoulder-length. You should have seen Papa's reaction last year when I had visited him to my new hairstyle. It was priceless. Mind you, 400 something-year-old vamps don't get shocked too easily. This from experience. First-hand experience.
Lisa was serving coffee and tea when I finally came in. My parents were sitting on the couch again. Nathaniel, Cherry, Zane, and Jason were on the floor. Aina was leaning agt tht the wall. Damian was sharing the love seat with Asher. Oh gre-at. Of all the vampires they had to bring along, they bring Asher. Lovely. Judging by that, one could probably tell that I do not get along with Asher. I used to get along with Asher, 9 years ago.
Remember how I said I could be killed by a bullet in the right spot? Well when I was 8, an assassin, after Mom, shot me. He had meant to hit Mom but his bullet hit me instead, in the left lung. Good thing, because the bullet had missed my heart. It was then when everyone found how easily I could die. Just one trigger finger and I was dead, completely dead. So in order to save my life, since I was dying and was healing too slowly, Asher gave me the first mark in becoming his human servant.
Now everyone was pretty good in keeping the first mark hush hush. They let me believe what I thought without actually lying to me. I had believed it was the power of my parents' trimutive that saved me from being completely dead. Anyway, Asher had done it for Mom and Papa's sake and maybe for Dad's but I'm not sure. Mom had even begged him to help since he was the only one who could. Well, not the only one, but the only one of the three human servant free master vampires in St. Louis who could be trusted. Besides, Mom didn't beg too often.
Then when I was 15, a vampire had ripped out my throat. Let's just say they didn't exactly appreciate me being able to see the past sometimes, or my gift to see the future because a) no one likes remembering the bad past b) me being able to see the future, that could lea me me warning my parents, which could lead to that vampire to be completely dead. Well he did end up that way after Mom killed him for trying to kill me and slaughtering a whole group of humans.
Again, I was healing too slowly, and I couldn't breath. This time when Asher gave me the second mark, he did it out of our friendship. You just don't let friends die if you can actually save them. Besides, I had saved him earlier that week by donating blood.
You see, a shapeshifter's blood or a human who's not exactly a human, like a necromancer for example, have a lot of kick in their blood. The coffee of the undead. And he had needed that extra kick because he was dying. There was no one else around except for Damian, a vampire, and Alyssa, another vampire. So me it was. Besides I was 1/3 werewolf, 1/3 vampire, 1/3 human, and fully soothsayer so you can imagine the amount of kick my blood gave Asher.
Again I believed it was my parents' trimutive that saved me and again everyone let me believe that. One night, I was 18 and doing a tarot card reading about my future since the next day I was heading off to university. As I was about to flip the third last card, I received a vision about me yelling at my fathers about being a human servant. So I went to confront Papa and Dad, and golly gosh gee I found I was a human servant. I didn't exactly get out the firecrackers and streamers, oh no, quite the opposite, I blew a gasket. Let's just say everything that night had ended up in an all-out yell fest.
That night I had completely lost my temper and self-control because I wasn't realizing what I did till it was too late. You see I have touched Mom, Dad, Papa, Asher, Damianson, son, Stephan, Nathaniel, Cherry, Zane, and a whole host of others many times. Enough times to see their past. And I'm good at acting as well as imitating/mimicking. You get the picture.
So I ran away and flew off to San Francisco with Aina, my best friend since we were little. I hadn't told anyone which university I was going to, so for 8 years I isolated myself away from St. Louis and anything that had to do with it. But last year, as well as all the years in San Fran, I had wondered if I was ever going to go back and face everyone. Okay so everyone might still hate me but at least I would have faced them before I really died. So I bought two plane tickets to St. Louis, since Aina wanted to come along.
Mom, Dad, and Papa forgave me. Nathaniel and Jason forgave me. Damian is still a little edgy with me. I don't blame him. I broke his trust when I used his past against him. Others forgave me, same edgy with me and and some still resent me. Asher would count as one of those who still resent me for what I did.
Doesn't matter, the feeling's mutuaut uut us in a room alone and unsupervised and we will try to kill each other. That's what we did last time. The reason why neither of us is really dead is because Jason pinned me down while Damian and Willie, another vamp, managed to hold back Asher. To t, we, we were once friends and I once, when I was a teenager, had a crush on him. But then again I had crushes on a lot of guys. You couldn't exactly blame me if you saw how many cute guys were working at Papa's buisinesses that included one strip club and one dance club.
Why am I so resentful in being a human servant? Allow me to put it this way, if you were a dog and you already had two leashes on your collar, would you want a third leash? In technical terms, I am a vampire Papa created and since he's a master vampire he has certain control of me. Not complete control because I can fight off the control but it's the principle that some control is control. To add more kittens to the litter, his animal to call was the wolf and since I'm a werewolf, you get the message. Dad also had some control, being an Ulfric. So I really did not need Asher's leash on my collar.
But it wasn't really the fact that I was an servant, it was the part that he did not tell me, no one told me. What really made me feel like an asshole was that I knew they were just trying to protect me. Everyone was trying to protect me from being a real monster. Too late, I was born one, and I am, what I am.
"Ma claire, you didn't tell us that you had a pet." Papa said as he stroked my dog, Jenny. Actually she was Lisa and Aina's dog as well. She's a black husky-wolf cross. Her breeder gave her up to the SPCA when she couldn't make it as a sled dog. I just couldn't resist her when I saw her sad eyes as she looked at me in her cage when Aina, Lisa, and I had been looking for a pet. Three years with us and she was the spoiled baby of the household. But we love her.
Right now Jenny was resting calmly at Papa's feet. Usually she was very energetic with strangers and would try to pounce on them or start barking. After a while, she'll get used to you. Then again, Jenny still pounces on me, Aina, Lisa, and Kull whenever we came inside. Did Papa's power to call wolves extend to half breeds? I've got to ask him sometime and hope he actually gives me an answer instead of giving me amused look, like the ones you would give a child when they did something adorable. Adorable, me? I grew out of that stage, I just don't think Papa agrees with me. But when you are over 400, 26 is a child.
"You never asked." I replied as I leaved on the wall next Aina. "Why are you here?"
"Why were you drunk last night, ma claire?"
"None of your damn buisiness." Sorry but I was getting annoyed mainly because he was still calling me by my nickname. That and the fact that everyone had came into the condo uninvited. Not univited actually, I was willingbet bet a body part that Lisa had invited them in. Vampires needed the invitation, or they get a good swift metaphysical kick to outside. I didn't mind ma claire when I was little but when I hit teenager up till now, it's annoying. Ma claire translates to my light. As if I'm anyone's light.
"It is my buisiness considering I'm your father."
"One of them." Dad added tightly. See, what did I tell you? Tension between those two.
"Aina and I got a little carrawayaway."
"A little? Julie, you and Aina were dragged in by a total stranger."
"One, Dad, he is not unknown, he is a friend. Two, just so you don't get the wrong idea, we did not have sex together. Never have, never will." The doorbell rang. Wonderful, just what I needed, now, more guests. It was Kull. Guess he was checking up with us after last night. He smirked at me when I opened the door.
"Are you sober now?"
Normally I would have wanted to wipe that smirk off his face, but not today and not in front my parents. Must convince them that I'm still a responsible adult, despite last night.
Mom went direct, and I could sense her stiffen. As usual, she was wearing a shoulder holster, with her favorite gun, the 9mm Browning Hi-Power, in it. "Who are you?"
"A friend." Kull grinned.
Aina let out a small groan. "Kull."
"Kull, we've got more company than we can handle right now, so why don't you come back later?" I asked as I opened the door again.
"That's okay, I'll wait in the kitchen." He smiled sweetly.
Aina glared at him. "Leave our coffee alone." Kull sometimes liked 'borrowing' the coffee. I can't tell whether he is doing it to annoy Aina and me, or that he drinks a lot of coffee. I think it's the first one.
"Papa, you still have not answered my question, why are you all here?"
"Ask your dear mother."
I looked at Mom. She didn't look a day over 30, but that was because she was Papa' human servant while Dad was his wolf to call. After the fourth and final mark you're the master vampire's forever, and one of the benefits is that you'll live forever or at least as long as the vampire as well as no aging. It was both great and as creepy as hell. Especially if you are same the age your parents look or around it.
"I have a zombie-raising."
"But California has its own animators."
"Not one that can raise a 400-year-old one."
I widened my eyes. "Since when could you do that?"
"If we use the trimutive's power, ma petite will have all the power she needs, with enough sacrafices, of course."
"Okay, then how did you find out where I lived?"
"Julie, have you forgotten that while you didn't keep in contact for those eight years, I did with my parents?" Aina pointed out.
Ah. Stupid me. "You could have at least called." They definitely knew my phone number because ever since last year, my parents, and sometimes others from St. Louis, have been calling me every week.
"You were not home when we phoned." Dad replied.
"Bullshit, it isn't too much to ask to have called a week or two earlier."
"Not when the assignment was on short notice."
I started rubbbing my temples. "I suppose you're going to want to meet the local pack?" I asked as I motioned to Dad, "And the local vampires?" I cocked my head to Papa.
"You could arrange that?" Nathaniel looked at me curiously.
I had to grin, "After nine years, do you really think I could avoided the fang and furry community of 'Frisco? Mom, I'm guessing that you also want to meet the pard of San Fran?"
"That would be great." Yup, like me, Mom disliked dealing in politics. But we didn't make the rules.
"Where you you staying?" Aina inquired curious/P> /P>
"At the Plaza Hotel."
"We'll be leaving now. You look like you need more sleep." Dad said as everyone got up and out through the the door of which Lisa opened.
She seemed pretty calm with all this. Then again, Lisa is intrigued with anything or anyone dealing with the preternatural. Today was heaven with vampires, werewolves, wereleopards, and one necromancer who was also The Executioner, scurge of the undead and sometimes the furry.
"Ya think." The sarcasm was thick enough to eat with a fork. I had used up all the Mary Sunshine I could muster.
I stood for a moment, watching my family and friends pile into the two rented cars across the street in the lot. One black Jeep and one dark green van. Everyone look out, the Executioner and gang are in town. San Francisco was never going to survive them.
