Liam nudged Jacob awake when they pulled into the garage. Jacob stretched and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “Sorry I passed out on you. I seem to be doing that a lot lately.”
Liam patted Jacob’s leg. “No need to apologize. That little blob is really taking a lot out of you.”
Jacob got out of the car and followed Liam out to the yard. “But you’re glad he’s there, right?”
Liam sighed and turned to his mate. “I guess. I mean, it’s a huge surprise. I’m still getting used to it. Hell, I’m still getting used to Bella having a baby.”
“Yeah.” Jacob nodded. “And speaking of Bella, I should probably go see how she’s doing. She probably missed me. I just really needed to get away, and I had a good time. Thank you.” He leaned down to plant a kiss on Liam’s nose.
“You’re quite welcome.” Liam smiled and followed him inside.
“I was wondering when you’d get home,” Bella greeted Jacob from the couch. “You were gone all day.”
“I missed you, too,” Jacob laughed as he sat beside her and put his arm behind her. “It really wasn’t anything you did. I just needed a break. Unlike you, I didn’t get to go to a tropical island.”
Bella only gave him a soft smile and moved to stand up. Rosalie got up to help her, but paused when Bella made a strange face. “Bella, what’s—” Rosalie’s question was cut off by a deafening scream. Everyone in the room covered their ears, then rushed to Bella’s side when she convulsed and vomited blood all over the carpet.
All eyes turned to Edward. He stood frozen, panic written all over his face. “Something’s wrong with the baby. I think the placenta detached.”
His suspicions were confirmed when Bella’s body began jerking around like a live rag doll. Jacob had to fight the nausea that washed over him from the sight of all the blood. He wasn’t leaving her. “Then it has to come out!” he cried. “Where’s Carlisle?”
“Buying more blood,” Edward answered as he scooped his wife up in his arms and rushed her to the basement.
“Call him!” Jacob shouted, following Edward.
“He’s coming,” Liam answered, “but he won’t be able to get here in time.”
Jacob stood on the stairs watching helplessly as Bella was laid on what looking like an operating table, the baby inside her fighting to be free of her. He flinched at every crunch, somehow knowing Bella wasn’t going to survive this.
Liam grabbed a scalpel out of Carlisle’s little black bag and sliced Bella’s belly open without hesitation or painkillers. The white layer of vampire skin surrounding the baby was exposed, and Liam began tearing through it with his teeth like some kind of animal.
Seconds later a wriggling, blood-covered baby girl was pulled out and placed into Edward’s arms. Edward’s features were neutral, because even though he was holding his newborn daughter, his wife had gone limp on the table.
Jacob rushed over and started chest compressions while Liam tried to stitch Bella up. The seconds ticked by with no sign of progress. “Fuck it all!” Liam snarled, and sank his teeth deep into her thigh. Jacob watched in horror as Liam bit Bella in several more places so her blood was dripping down his chin. “Keep going!” Liam barked the order. “The venom needs to spread through her system to do any good.”
Jacob was going into shock himself, but somehow he managed to obey. Suddenly Bella’s broken body seemed to be healing right before his eyes, and several seconds later her heart started to beat on its own again. Jacob stepped back, his giant form trembling.
Liam started cleaning Bella up. It was clear from his expression that he wasn’t at all pleased with the way things had turned out. “Maybe you should sit down,” Edward said as he approached Jacob with an empathetic expression and a soft tone. Jacob wanted to hate Edward, but at that moment he couldn’t. Edward didn’t look thrilled, either, and he was being way too nice to justify hatred.
Jacob followed Edward up the stairs and out to the living room. Rosalie was on the couch with the infant. Jacob wanted to hate the baby, too. She was the one who had torn her mother apart from the inside out. Did she even care that her mother was dying?
“She was panicking,” Edward mumbled as he helped Jacob into a chair. “She didn’t mean to . . . .”
Jacob huffed. As if that made any difference. He was angry at Bella, too. Why did she have to do this to herself? She kept assuring everyone that she’d survive this, but she had to have known what could happen. Maybe that was the whole point. After all, she’d gotten what she wanted in the end.
All eyes turned toward Carlisle as he came in. “It’s over,” Edward said. “We’re just waiting for the venom to run its course.”
Carlisle nodded. “I watched the whole thing through Liam. It shouldn’t take long. Jacob, are you all right?”
Jacob only shook his head. He was afraid of what he might say if he opened his mouth. “We’re all a little shaken,” Edward answered for him.
Liam came up from the basement and went to Jacob’s side, gently placing a hand on the werewolf’s shoulder. “Come on, let’s get you cleaned up.”
Jacob silently followed Liam upstairs, content to let Liam undress him like a life-size doll. Liam tossed the bloody clothes into the hamper and drew a bath. Jacob was able to find comfort in his mate’s presence, and the anger slowly started to fade away.
Liam got into the tub with him and washed him while Jacob stared down at the red water. “I think we both knew how this was going to end,” Liam said, pulling the drain plug. “It was her decision, just like you decided to keep our baby.”
Jacob only nodded and got out of the tub to dry off. As much as he didn’t like it, he knew Liam was right. There was nothing that could be done about it now. “How long?” he asked.
Liam shrugged. “Since her body is putting up little to no resistance, probably about a day.”
“Okay. I guess I’ll go to bed, then.”
“Want me to sit with you?”
“Yeah.”
Liam followed Jacob into the bedroom and made himself comfortable. Jacob slipped under the covers and allowed himself to relax just enough to fall asleep. Tomorrow would be a whole new day, and he was going to have to start getting used to the idea that Bella was in the basement becoming a vampire.
When Jacob’s eyes opened it took a minute for him to remember everything that had happened the night before. A cold, hard ball formed in the pit of his stomach and he ended up sprinting to the bathroom to vomit. Liam was there in a flash, lovingly stroking Jacob’s hair.
“Thanks,” Jacob mumbled, rinsing with a little mouthwash. “How’s . . . ?” He was almost afraid to ask.
“I don’t know. I’ve been up here with you all night,” Liam answered.
Jacob pulled Liam close and held him tightly. “You really stayed with me all night?”
“Of course. You needed me. Carlisle can take care of Bella. Why don’t we go down to the kitchen and I’ll get you some crackers or something.”
Jacob nodded and followed his mate silently. The anger was gone, replaced with a cold numbness. He didn’t feel much of anything when he passed by the couch where Edward was holding the baby, feeding her from a steel bottle filled with what Jacob was pretty sure was blood.
The baby looked so different now. She was cleaned up and dressed in a tiny yellow outfit. Her wide eyes were a warm chocolate brown, and her head was covered in golden brown curls. She looked so much like Bella.
“Did you name her?” Jacob asked.
“Bella said if it was a girl she wanted to name her Renesmee, after her two mothers.”
“Renesmee.” Jacob repeated the name. “It has a nice ring to it, and it kinda fits.”
“Have you thought about names?”
“I haven’t thought about much of anything,” Jacob admitted. “Can I hold her?”
Rosalie hissed, but Edward glared at her. “Sure.”
Jacob felt huge and awkward as Edward stood and handed over the tiny little bundle. Jacob was half afraid he would break her. The werewolf was flooded with emotion as he gazed down at the infant. Her little body was so warm, and he could hear her heart beating. It was so strange: she was alive, and yet she clearly wanted blood. She was one of a kind, just like her name.
Liam brought out some toast and Jacob handed Renesmee back to Edward. He tried not to think about what was going on in the basement while he ate his breakfast. Everything was changing so fast. In his wolf form he was extraordinarily powerful, and even as a human he was young and strong. He wasn’t used to feeling so helpless, and he didn’t like it one little bit. But . . . what could he do?
