Sara dressed nicely for the dinner. She felt weak in the knees. Jase put an arm around her.
Nathaniel smiled at her. "It'll be great..."
She nodded, but didn't say anything. She sat down on the couch and waited.
Micah swore as he parked his car, look in the review mirror. Damn He should have worn the other shirt. This one was stuffy. He looked like a pompous ass. He sighed. Too late now. Slowly, he climbed from the car. His baby was inside...
Sara bit her lip as the minutes ticked by. She was going to meet her real father, a man she didn't even know existed until a few weeks ago.
A confident knock came at the door, and Nathaniel moved to get it.
Jase squeezed Sara's hand. She stood up to greet Micah.
There was muffled conversation in the front hall before they entered the livingroom. Micah was short- five foot three tops... Longish dark curls hung around his face, and chartreuse green kitty eyes stared at Sara. "God..."
Sara had promised herself she wouldn't cry, but she felt wetness on her face as she stood up. "Hi..."
The Nimir Raj stared at the beautiful young woman before him, swallowing as tears welled in his eyes. "You're... God... You're... Sara..."
She nodded. "You must be Micah, my father."
He nodded, slowly stepping forward. "I'm sorry... I don't know exactly what I should do... what you'll want or..." He ran a hand over his face.
Sara went to him and hugged him. She buried her face in his chest. Her drunken mother had taken him away from her and now he was all she had left.
Micah hugged her close, burying his face in her hair, crying unashamedly. "I can't believe you're here..." He swallowed. "I'm holding my baby..."
She let him hold her tightly. At first she'd been unsure of how to act, but this man was her father. "Dad..." She cried.
Nathaniel glanced at Jase, taking her hand and glancing at the kitchen.
Jase smiled at Nathaniel. They snuck off into the kitchen to give them some privacy.
After a few minutes, Micah pulled back, cupping Sara's face. "You're so beautiful... you look like my mother..."
"Why did she take me away from you?" Sara asked.
"Becky? Because... I was turned. She thought I was a monster..." Micah pushed a hand through his hair.
"She was wrong. I mean, Jase and Nathaniel are such great people and Nathaniel spoke so highly of you."
Micah smiled. "Well, I'm glad you're not scared of me... I was worried."
Sara returned the smile. "I am glad that you're a good person. I was scared..."
The Nimir Raj grinned again. "I can't get over how beautiful you are..."
She wiped her eyes. "I can't believe I'm meeting you."
"I can't believe it either... after fifteen years, nine months, three weeks to the day... and I've got you back..." Micah touched her hair gently. "I'm trying not to be lame... but... God... I held you once and now..."
"I can't believe she never told me about you, but she was never around much either." Sara squeezed his hand.
Micah shook his head. "I have you now... that's all that matters." He paused. "Where is Becky?"
"She's in jail for killing my da- step-father." She told Micah.
"Wh.... what? My God..." Micah gaped at her.
"Yeah. I've been living with him for years since she left us. She came back last month, got in a fight with him, and killed him."
He closed his eyes, swearing mentally. "I'm so sorry, Baby. I don't even know what to say..."
"It's ok. She is a worthless drunk. I'm just glad I don't have to see her ever again." Sara said.
Micah hugged her again, unable to stop himself. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there..."
"You didn't know. You can't blame yourself." Sara closed her eyes as he hugged her.
He laughed softly. "I'm the parent... how come you're telling me what I can and can't do?"
She shrugged. "I guess I'm used to being on my own."
"Sara..." He bit his lower lip. "I want... I have to be part of your life now..."
"I know. That's why I wanted to find you. I want a father." Sara told him.
"I might not be the best, Sara... but I swear on my life that I will do whatever I can for you."
"I am just glad to have a parent again." She smiled at him.
"Sara? Nimir Raj? Dinner's done." Nathaniel grinned at the father and daughter. Sara had his nose!
Micah nodded. "Micah, Nathaniel."
"Oh. Right. Micah."
"So are you really the leader of the leopards?" She asked as they headed to the kitchen.
He nodded. "Yes, I am. I'm the... 'king' I suppose you'd say."
"That's cool." She sat down at the table.
"Micah's great. It's Anita who-" Nathaniel froze in setting a glass of milk before Jase.
Jase touched his hand. "That's the crazy chick Nathaniel used to live with right?" Sara asked.
Micah nodded slowly. "And Nathaniel... you're being honest." He glanced at Sara. "Sadly, she is my Nimir Ra. However... she isn't who she used to be. She's gone mad with power."
"So she's like the leopard queen?" She paused. "Can't you like kick her out of your group or something? Like impeaching her."
"I am afraid it doesn't quite work that way."
Nathaniel sat at the table, then stood again. "I... does anyone want anything else? I'm sorry, Nirmi Raj- Micah, Sara. Did you want something to drink? I didn't think-"
"Nathaniel." Micah's voice was stronger. "Be calm."
"I can get the drinks." Jase stood up and got them something to drink. She kissed Nathaniel as she sat down.
Sara looked at Micah. "So you're royally screwed then?"
He shook his head, laughing. "How well put, Sara."
Nathaniel sat, fidgeting. "You shouldn't stand too much, Jase..."
"I go see Lillian tomorrow." She whispered. "I'm sure I'll be fine."
Sara smiled at him. "She lives with you doesn't she?"
Micah nodded. "Unfortunately. What grade are you in now, Sara?"
Nathaniel shook his head. "You're sure?"
"I'm a sophomore." Sara told him as she ate. Jase nodded.
"That's great." He paused. "And your boyfriend?"
Nathaniel choked. Shit! he'd given the Nimir Raj's daughter condoms!!
Sara blushed. Oh God, he was a were. He could smell Elias all over her. "Elias is a sophomore too."
"Ah." Micah, no commenting. You haven't been around- you can't judge her actions. So a little thug is slobbering all over your baby in a manner far too-
"So... let's eat." Nathaniel served Micah a large portion.
"Maybe you know him. He's Mika's nephew." Sara said taking a bite.
"Mika, the new Lupa?" He quirked a brow.
"Yes," Jase answered for Sara. "He's a good kid."
"Mm." Micah made a noncommittal noise. "So, your favorite subject? I'm assuming that Richard is a teacher of yours?"
Nathaniel glanced at Jase. Nimir Raj did NOT like a boy sniffing around his baby.
"I love math. And Mr. Zeeman teaches my science class." She didn’t mention that was where she meet Elias. Micah didn't seem to care for the fact that she was dating.
A buzzing noise disturbed the room, and Micah pulled out his cell, saw the number, and pressed ignore before looking at Sara. "That's great. I was very good at math. I wanted to be an accountant."
"What do you do?" Sara asked him.
"I work for the Coalition for Better Understanding Between Lycanthrope and Human Communities." Micah sipped his drink.
"That's cool." She said sipping her soda.
Jase patted Nathaniel's knee. He looked so nervous.
Nathaniel laced his fingers through Jase's just as the phone rang. "I'll get it!" He hurried over to it. "Graison residen-"
"Put Micah on the phone, now." Anita said, her voice laced with anger.
The submissive blinked, and looked at Micah, who shook his head. "Tell her I am busy."
"Micah's unavailable-"
"Shut up and put him on the damn phone, Nathaniel."
"He's... he's busy-"
Micah growled as he heard the conversation, standing and taking the phone. "What, Anita? What is so very important that you had to call me when I told you I was busy tonight?"
"Richard just called. Shayne escaped somehow." She smiled as she said it. She’d done a good job of masking her scent.
"What? How?" Micah shook his head. "Never mind. I'll call him." He hung up the phone, dialing the Ulfric's number.
Richard recognized Micah's number. "Hello, Micah." God, he hated to tell the cat that he'd lost Shayne.
"Anita called- what happened?"
"I don't know. Someone helped him, but the scent was covered well. Warn Jase and Caleb."
"Of course. Did someone call Caleb?" Micah cursed the fact that the Pard had no real dominants. There was no one he could post around Caleb to protect him... or to help protect Jase and Nathaniel. And his daughter.
"No, I just found out myself." He sounded worried. "Micah, the Pack is dealing with Mika's stalker. I hate to ask this of you, but can you take care of Shayne?"
"I'll consider it personal. Just make sure that my daughter is safe."
"You're daughter?" Since when did the Nimir-raj have a daughter?
"Sara."
"What?" Richard nearly shouted.
"Sara. She's my daughter. Long story I'll explain later." Micah looked at his baby and smiled.
Sara smiled at him. "You know she's dating my soon-to-be-nephew?"
Micah's eyes darkened. "So I've heard."
"You don't sound happy about it?"
"Your soon-to-be-nephew, Ulfric, is a teenaged boy... messing around with my baby. You tell me."
"I've already had the talk with him, Micah and let me just say I'd rather shoot myself that go through that again."
"I'll have the talk with him. A very important talk." Micah barely stopped himself from growling, and Nathaniel shifted closer to Jase.
Jase smiled and hugged him as Sara shifted uncomfortable in her seat. Poor Elias. "I'll warn him."
"You do that."Micah shook his head. "I have to call Caleb."
"Thank you, Nimir-raj." He hung up.
He hung up the phone, pushing a hand through his curls, looking at Sara. "I'm sorry, Sweetie, but I have to go. I can't let this wait." He pulled another phone from his pocket and handed it to Sara. "You call me whenever you want, alright? Anytime you need anything... and you can call your friends too."
Sara stared at the phone. First Jase and the dress, now this... "Thank you so much." She looked up at him.
"Not a problem." He glanced at Jase, then back at Sara. "Let me know about anything you need. I'll make sure you get it." He kissed her forehead, picking up his own phone. "My number is in there... it's under Micah." He swallowed. "I didn't want to push. But you call me what you want."
She looked down at the phone. "I'll call if I need anything, Dad." She said softly, overwhelmed by emotion.
He hugged her tightly, blinking back tears. "I've got to go... Can I see you tomorrow?"
"I'd like that." Sara said. "Maybe we can go do something."
"Of course. You think of anything you want to do, we'll do it. Alright?" He straightened, hating the thought of leaving.
"Go, I'll call you tomorrow." She smiled at him.
Micah smiled, hurrying from the house.
Nathaniel bit his lip. "Um. Sara? Please... shower next time before your father comes over...?"
Sara turned bright red. "I forgot."
Jase gently hit Nathaniel's shoulder. "Leave the girl alone. She's had quite a shock."
"Well... I know. But... I don't think she wants a dead boyfriend."
"I don't think Micah would kill him." Jase assured Sara.
Nathaniel looked down. "Um... no. He won’t kill him..."
"He'd just scare him." Jase kissed the back on his neck. Sara rolled her eyes and headed to her room.
On the outside Jase was calm, but the man who'd killed her child was out there free...it was a freighting thought.
Nathaniel hugged Jase close, rubbing her back. "I won't let him touch you, Jase... I swear it..."
"I know Nathaniel, but it makes me uneasy knowing he'd out there." She said softly.
He rubbed his cheek over hers. "I know, love..."
"I think I'm going to turn in early tonight. Can you do the dishes?" Jase asked.
"Of course. You sleep well, alright?" He kissed her gently. "I'll be up in a bit."
"Alright." She headed upstairs and got ready for bed. She crawled under the covers.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Caleb yawned as he sat on the couch, waiting for Jason to get home from work, flipping through the channels on the TV.
Jason came home. "Hey." He kicked off his shoes and flopped down onto the couch.
"Hey hun." The leopard smiled, reaching into the fridge and pulling out a beer, which he handed Jason. "How was work tonight?"
"Long. I had to take Zane's first shift because he got into a fender bender and was late." Jason opened the beer and took a drink.
"Damn... that sucks... his fault or someone else's?" Caleb moved, massaging Jason's back.
"Some guy hit him when he stopped at a light." He moaned softly.
Caleb smiled slightly at Jason's moaning. "Poor Zane... didn't he just get a new car?"
"Yep, a week ago." Jason relaxed under his hands.
"Damn, that sucks." Caleb shook his head. "I got a job..."
"Oh? Where?"
"Danse Macabre. Asher was finally able to talk with me, as Jean-Claude had to woo the mayor over some project of his."Caleb shrugged. "Should be easy enough. Dance. Avoid being groped while looking sexy..."
"All I know is that I get to hurt any female that gets overly friendly." Jason growled.
"Jason... you get groped.... nightly. Or ogled naked...ish..." Caleb blinked.
"I'll hurt them Caleb." He growled again.
"Jason..." Caleb moved, sitting next to him. "Where's the jealousy coming from?"
"You're mine. I can't even think about those women touching you like I do."
The leopard paused. "Would you rather I didn't work there?"
"No, I mean you want this job." Jason looked away from him.
"That's because I feel like a lazy ass around here... everyone else keeps turning down my applications because of my stellar lack of a career record or college education... Well, that’s what they’re saying. I think it’s the whole ‘outed were’ bit." Caleb cupped Jason's face, making him look him in the eye. "Now... do you want me to tell Asher I can't?"
"No." He said firmly. "You want to work, so I want this for you. It'll make you happy."
"Jason... if it seriously bothers you, tell me, alright?" Caleb shifted. "I don't want to upset you-"
Jason kissed him. "It's ok."
Caleb paused. "You... um... you got a call earlier..."
"From who?"
He looked down. "Anita."
Jason froze. "What did she want?"
"I don't know... I know she flipped out at me when I answered... then turned really sicky-sweet for some reason..." Caleb bit his lip.
He growled. "Don't let her intimidate you. She's a bitch."
Caleb shrugged. "She wanted you to call her back."
"Hell will freeze over first." Jason put his head in Caleb's lap.
"I thought you were friends?" Caleb blinked. "You don't have to stop being friends with her for me..." he stroked Jason's hair.
"She isn't a friend of mine. Not anymore."
"Why?" He asked softly.
"Because she's changed... become... evil."
"I don't understand...?" Caleb frowned. "I haven't see her since we first got together..."
"She isn't the same. She's losing it, Caleb." Jason didn't looked at him.
Stroking his lover's hair, Caleb bit his lip. Why wouldn't he look at him? "Jason..."
"Losing Jean-Claude pushed her over the edge." He said softly.
"I'm sorry..." Caleb actually did feel sorry- Anita had been Jason's friend.
"Nothing to be sorry about. The Anita that was my friend is long gone."
Caleb leaned down, kissing his lover.
Jason sighed. "How was your day?"
"It was fine... better cause you're home..." He pet Jason's hair in soothing motions.
He grinned at him. "I look forward to coming home to see you."
Caleb grinned. "Maybe I should get a lacy apron, make dinner and wait on you... in only the apron..."
Jason laughed. "Oh, I think I'd enjoy that way too much."
"Would you?" Caleb smirked leaning down to kiss him again.
"God, I'd have to just bend you over and take you as soon as I walked through the doors." He ran his tongue across his lips.
Shivering, Caleb swallowed. "I'll make a note to get one..."
"No one would see us for about a week." He warned him.
"I'm good with that." He grinned.
"Good." Jason growled as he pulled Caleb down for a kiss.
Caleb purred, kissing Jason deeply.
Jason groaned when someone knocked on the door.
Caleb pouted. "We don't want to buy anything!" He'd been hit up for Girl Scout cookies three times...
Jason swore as he got up. Jean-Claude would let the Girl Scouts in and hinted that they should buy stuff. Good PR for the community... and Jean-Claude. He jerked open the door. "Micah...come in."
Micah sighed. "Hello, Jason... Caleb... we need to talk."
Caleb stilled. Fuck. He was in trouble because they thought he hadn't given Jason Anita's message!
He moved so the cat could enter. "Can I get you something to drink?" He closed the door.
"No... let's sit down." Micah nodded at the couch.
Hugging his knees to his chest, Caleb looked at Jason, wondering what this was about.
Jason went to Caleb and wrapped his arms around him. "Has something happened?"
"Unfortunately... I'm sure you remember Shayne, and that he was awaiting sentencing in the Oubliette..."
No... no... he's not free... Caleb's thoughts raced, as the Nimir Raj confirmed his worst fears.
"He has escaped with someone's help... but the person's scent has been too well covered for us to know who..."
Jason's grip tightened on Caleb. "I'll kill him if he comes near Caleb."
"Jason, I'm taking care of the matter as Richard's busy with Mika's stalker... and I assure you he will be taken care of."
Caleb shook, tearing away from Jason to race into the bathroom, vomiting harshly.
Jason gave him a few minutes before he went to check on him. "Caleb?"
He sat on the floor, sobbing, knees pulled to his chest as he tried to make himself as small as possible.
"Oh Caleb." He hugged him. "I won't let him hurt you again."
Caleb hid his face in his knees, unable to look up.
Micah stepped into the bathroom doorway, then moved to kneel before the submissive leopard, letting his beast rub over Caleb's soothingly. "Don't worry, Caleb. I'm taking care of it... He's dead this time. He's hurt too many people..." He rubbed Caleb's shoulder.
Jason met Micah's gaze. "Does Jase know?"
"Yes. She was there while I was having dinner with my daughter and Anita called." Micah watched as Caleb slowly calmed. "I recommend that you two head over there, or bring them here, perhaps. Jase's house is out in the country, and not enough neighbors."
"Jase won't leave. I know her. She doesn't ever back down." He stroked Caleb's hair. "Is it ok if we go there, Caleb?"
He nodded slowly, biting his lip. "S... sorry..."
"There's no reason for you to be sorry, love." Jason kissed his lover's temple.
"I... I freak-"
"Caleb, I'd be worried if you hadn't. This was a natural reaction." Micah stood. "I'm going to do some wolf hunting... you guys get to Jase's and stay there, alright?
Jason nodded. "Sure, but did you say you had a daughter?"
Micah smiled. "Sara..."
Caleb blinked. "Huh?"
"Sara is my daughter, Caleb. Her mother ran from me when I was infected. I held her once before she left."
"Oh God, Micah." Jason said. "I'm glad that you have finally found her again."
"Thank you..." Micah smiled. "You guys be careful. Call my cell if anything happens..."
He nodded. "I will." He kissed Caleb.
Caleb practically crawled into Jason's lap as Micah bid him goodbye.
Jason rocked him gently. "It's ok. I'm here."
The leopard just cried, shaking. "I can't..."
"He'll be dead soon Caleb. It'll be ok. I swear he won't touch you again."
"I... I know you'll try..."
"I will." He growled. "You are my life now."
Caleb just hid his face in Jason's neck.
He rubbed Caleb's back, feeling lost... and angry. No way was Shayne hurting the ones he loved. Not any more.
