Misplaced Affections
by Moonstalk
Rating: This chapter is PG...possibly PG-13...
Disclaimer: The characters portrayed are not my property but that of the estate of R. Dahl, Tim Burton, Freddie Highmore and Johnny Depp. I'm not making any money off this or anything.
Warning: This is Wonka/Charlie... Charlie, while older than in the book/movies, is still underage. Wonka is still overage. x3 And they're both males. This chapter is rather innocent, so there isn't too much to warn you about, except that it might get worse. I know where it's going for the most part, but it could surprise me. And if certain things happen, they happen. I make no promises.
Summary: This is pretty much the exposition. If you've read the book(s) and/or seen the movie(s), you know all this. It's mostly just in my words, with a few little extra things thrown in. ;3 Such as setting it up for slash. xD
I would like to thank Idol Hands for writing fanfic that inspired this. ^^;
Charlie Bucket had been nine years old when he found out that he was the luckiest little boy alive. He had won Wonka's last golden ticket and toured the factory with the quickly dwindling group of other children. He had been the last one left and Wonka, delighted, had told Charlie how he was the special child, the biggest winner, for he was to inherit Wonka's wonderful factory when he came of age.
The entire Bucket family had moved to Wonka's factory to be close to Charlie, who had to live with Wonka to learn all his wonderful secrets, and Charlie had started his apprenticeship right away.
At first, Charlie looked up to Wonka the way small children look up to their older siblings. It was pure hero worship. But as he spent time with the fantastic Mister Willy Wonka, he realized that Wonka was human, too. He had his faults and his weaknesses, just like anyone else.
When Charlie learned this, his hero-worship turned instead into great admiration. Mister Wonka was just like his Grandpa Joe in young Charlie's eyes. He was a wonderful adult and looked after Charlie with only his best interests in mind, and Charlie felt very safe around Wonka and in his factory.
Charlie had even grown to love Mister Willy Wonka as he loved Grandpa Joe and his parents. Wonka was much like the big brother Charlie had never had.
When they weren't working, Wonka would take Charlie to the most fantastic parts of his factory and explain them to Charlie, as he had never given the full tour he kept promising. Charlie loved seeing new parts of the factory and even began to ask Wonka if he had this or that and if Wonka replied no, Charlie eagerly explained how it would work and Wonka would go to work on making it part of the factory.
Charlie liked it best when Wonka took him to see a part of the factory that he had dreamed up. He liked feeling like he was actually part of the factory, working magic like Willy Wonka did, and not just some kid who got lucky and stumbled into fortune.
As time passed and Charlie helped Wonka expand his factory and learned the secrets behind his fantastic candies, Charlie grew even fonder of Wonka and even began to think of them as equals. He could easily converse with the Oompa Loompas in their native tongue and he came up with quite a few new candies and even had his own inventing room.
Charlie Bucket had been Willy Wonka's apprentice for five years and was now fourteen. His fifteenth birthday was fast approaching, though. He wondered if Wonka was planning anything special...
Around his thirteenth birthday, Charlie had started having funny feelings and desires. He started caring less about his family and wanting to be around Wonka more and more. When Wonka wasn't around, Charlie sometimes felt lost, confused, disoriented. He didn't know what was wrong with him and shook himself out of it. He was determined to work harder to curry Wonka's favor.
At times, when Willy Wonka was around, Charlie would find himself staring at Wonka or grinning stupidly or blushing when Wonka smiled at him or gave him a reassuring nod. He also sometimes felt nervous, almost panicky. In these cases, Charlie would become irritated with himself and kick himself, wondering what was wrong with him. The wonderful candy maker hadn't affected him like this before...
When Willy Wonka had first seen the five children assembled and ready to tour his factory, he hadn't been very optimistic.
There was that fat kid... He was more likely to eat the factory than run it. With chocolate smeared all over his face, he didn't look much like he'd keep things as sanitary as they should be, either.
Then there was the spoiled girl. She hadn't even found her own ticket. She'd simply demanded one of her father and he had gotten it for her. The little brat was likely to demand things of Wonka and the Oompa Loompas were she to become his heir. Wonka did not take orders and would not have his loyal friends turned into slaves of a child's whimsy.
Next was that beastly gum-chewing girl. She seemed to care only about winning and only if it involved gum. She was constantly smacking and popping her gum, too, which would drive him simply mad. How could he talk to someone with a wad of gum mangling their speech? And she wouldn't be concerned about any candy but gum, and Wonka's factory was a very diverse place. He wasn't going to be known as a gum man.
Then there was that violent little boy who had only bought one candy bar he hadn't even wanted because he figured out the pattern. It was very clever of the little rat, but if he didn't even care about a chocolate bar, how was he supposed to run a candy factory? And if all he did was watch television, he couldn't have too many original ideas. He would probably dismiss anything fanciful as special effects, too. He'd been desensitized and was not the right sort of kid at all.
And the fifth little kid! He was a scrawny little thing in ragged clothes. It was a wonder he got a golden ticket at all. He'd probably be as bad as that fat kid, wanting to eat stuff. Then he'd balloon up and look like the fat kid, too, and who knew how sanitary he was? He probably couldn't afford a change of clothes and probably wore those all the time. How gross.
But as he'd led the children and their respective parents around, they'd all proven themselves unworthy except that one. The fat kid touched his precious chocolate river, ruining quite a lot of chocolate and almost breaking one of his pipes. The gum-chewer proved her interest in only gum and had to be de-juiced. She was a rather pretty shade of purple now, though... The spoiled one demanded one of his specially-trianed squirrels and got thrown down the garbage chute. Who'd have guessed she was a bad nut? And that TV-obsessed kid got himself shrunk and then over-stretched. What a silly little kid!
That poor little waif, though... He was quiet and respectful and properly appreciative. In fact, that little kid almost seemed to worship Wonka as much as his batty grandfather. He could be cleaned up and given new clothes. It would hardly break the bank. And with his worshipful air, he might just be properly molded into the kind of creative genius that was needed to take over for Willy Wonka.
And if things didn't work out... Well, there was always some sort of horrible 'accident' that could befall the boy and/or his parents!
With these reassuring thoughts in mind, Wonka decided that he would publicly announce his new heir. He just hoped the heir would work out and wouldn't need to be replaced. He didn't think he could handle another round of beastly children.
After installing the child's home and family in his factory, cleaning them up, and reclothing them in proper, clean clothing, Wonka got right to work on testing the child's apprentice abilities. The sooner he found out if there needed to be an 'accident,' the sooner he could find a replacement.
He was pleasantly surprised to find that Charlie Bucket was a bright, fast learner and very creative. He wasn't in the factory long before he started coming up with wonderful new ideas that made Willy Wonka wonder why he hadn't come up with them himself.
Also, he had expected the child to touch things he shouldn't and had dreaded having to like a schoolmarm to the kid. Luckily, the kid knew when to keep his hands to himself.
He was greatly pleased that his five tickets had brought him such a wonderful heir and that he only had to run the 'contest' once. He decided that there was no need for an 'accident' and the boy would work out quite wonderfully.
Gradually, Wonka found himself liking the kid. He really wasn't a bad kid and was probably the best heir ten of his 'contests' could find. (Thank God he'd found Charlie in the first instead of the tenth!)
One morning, however, when Charlie was about eleven and a half, Wonka had excitedly given him a new snozzberry lollipop that wouldn't get sticky no matter how much you slobbered on it. The image of young Charlie bucket eagerly sucking on the cylindrical thing was just too much for the great chocolatier. He found that he had forgotten something very important and must rush off to deal with it right away.
He made a mental note not to offer the boy any more phallic candy, despite (or perhaps because of) how much he'd enjoyed seeing the boy swirl it around his mouth... He could almost imagine the tongue sliding over it, getting every last iota of flavor...
No, no! He mustn't think of that. Bad Willy. The boy is your heir, not your plaything!
Every now and then, he would find himself overwhelmed by his attraction to the boy, though he refused to admit it. He would simply find an excuse and leave the boy until he felt more in control. He knew it hurt and bewildered Charlie, but he couldn't take the risk of doing something foolish to the boy and ruining everything. Besides, he did his best to make it up to Charlie later.
As the boy grew older, Wonka found himself having these issues more and more often. The boy, Charlie, was less of a child. He'd been cute then, but now he was growing handsome. Wonka felt less like some dirty old man. They boy was hardly a boy any more, after all...
And it wasn't like he hadn't noticed Charlie's reactions to him. At first, he thought he was just projecting his feelings out of sheer hopefulness. But when it continued to happen, Wonka realized that Charlie really did have feelings for him. At this discovery, his heart sang with joy. He invented some of his best candies in the brief time before it occurred to him that Charlie probably just had misplaced affections.
The poor boy had been to a public school, but he had hardly had the attention span to pay attention to girls. He had to learn all he could and conserve his energy to get home. The poor boy was so young when he entered the factory, he probably hadn't been interested in girls anyway.
But then puberty hit and the only person not related to him was Willy Wonka, whom he adored anyway. It was only natural for the boy to develop a bit of a crush on the amazing chocolatier...
At these revelations, Willy Wonka's heart sank and he didn't come up with anything for a while. Charlie still gave him joy, but it was mixed with a deep ache, the ache of rejection, even though Charlie hadn't rejected him yet.
In fact, it appeared that if he were to make a move on dear Charlie, he wouldn't be turned down. He contemplated just how he would do this many, many nights. His creative brain came up with oh-so-many different ways to seduce sweet Charlie and he stayed up many a sleepless night, relieving his...tensions.
But he had noticed that the Buckets saw the way Charlie sometimes looked at him and they were a bit worried. It would do him no good to make a move on Charlie with them like that. There was no way they would approve of such a pairing...
Wonka wasn't sure which they detested more, the difference in the ages or the lack of difference in the genders. Either way, there were two strikes against him. If he started it, they would likely say it was non-consensual, rape.
Wonka's heart ached at the very thought of that. He couldn't imagine intentionally hurting precious Charlie, especially not for such a selfish, dirty reason. If something were to happen between them, Charlie would have to start it. Even then, there was no guarantee he'd be safe from accusations, but it would soothe his conscience.
Unfortunately, this was all pure fantasy. Charlie was too sweet and pure to come to the candy man about his confused feelings. Besides that, what did he know of relationships between possible lovers? The only ones he saw were his parents and grandparents and they were all much past the courting stage.
Wonka decided that he would just have to expose Charlie to some fetching young women and see if any of them caught his eye. Charlie's family would be much more pleased if it was a young woman who held Charlie's affections.
Wonka believed he could use Charlie's upcoming birthday to expose him to a bevy of young ladies. Hopefully, none of them would be silly enough to wear glass slippers to the party...
