“You’re nuts. This is nuts. This is insane. “
“Remember you’re sitting in the next seat on the same plane when you say that.” Sydney plumped her pillow against the window settling in for their flight. “How the hell did I let you talk me into this?” “Because you work for the same driven woman and realized that THIS will be easier than explaining to Cheri during the entire event next week why we couldn't make this problem go away. Why after the speaker signed the contract he backed out. Never mind that it’s a breach of contract and we could sue. We need a body there and I don’t plan on showing up in San Antonio without a speaker.” Jackie sighed. “Do you have a plan? Of course you have a plan. You always have a plan, then a backup plan. Could we get arrested or incur bodily injury?” “We’re not gonna get arrested. And if we do, we’re not without backup or connections. Working with the management and event organization department of the security firm has its perks. The guys seem to always come to the rescue.” “They protect us from others, not from ourselves, Syd. “ “You know, you really have to work on that sarcasm.” “You’re one to talk. That guy at the last convention took you seriously the entire two weeks onsite. Ginger told us every morning she’d get a call from the hotel staff that a guy had been waiting all night with a single black rose in the hotel lobby for some hoochie coochie hot tamale.” Jackie smiled amused at Sydney. Sydney squinted back, “Did he seriously think I would show up? And who the hell knew you could find black roses in Alaska.” “Someone with a lot of time on their hands and a great greenhouse. It is Alaska, what else would they do with all those daylight hours?” “I’ll be more direct with him next time. I thought everyone knew my signature flower by now was a gerbera daisy. Even the security detail got me a bouquet of them at the end of the event in Jersey last year.” “That’s their job to know details of people and not very many people would go out of their way to supply them with water and food and ensure they had break coverage. Especially with an insane schedule we keep during the expos. They appreciate that, Syd.” “We rely so much on them that it’s the least I could do.” “Speaking of insane work hours. You never fully explained how we BOTH let alone one of us got approval for leave from Mata Hare.” “I was straight forward as always that we either go convince the speaker we hired to do the job or we swallow that very large cost item and find another speaker which is impossible at this late date. I convinced her that since the security detail had already been sent to San Antonio, I needed you to give me a hand and act as escort. It helps to have a dyke on the team.” Sydney chuckled knowing Jackie long enough that although Jackie wouldn’t take offense, a rebuttal was coming. “I dress more like a lady than you do at times, Ms. Tomboy.” Sydney laughed. “It’s true; my sense of fashion has only been enhanced by our friendship. Otherwise, I’d still be wearing flip flops with my skirts to work. However my style has developed beyond capris and t-shirts to more of a bohemian style.” Jackie rolled her eyes, “Whatever you say. If you want to delude yourself into thinking that’s a fashion fit to impress. Speaking of swallowing, that’s the activity I’m hoping the week following the expo will keep you most busy.” “Swallowing? Oh, yes! Well, I expect they serve drinks all over the island. I can’t believe you finally talked me into a vacation.” “I wasn’t only referring to drinks, Ms. Queen of double entendres. You my friend have got to get out more. You are not my type and the queen of viciousness, our boss is starting to think we’re a couple we hang out so much.” “What other people think doesn’t bother me.” “It should only because you need to find a guy and at least get laid if not find someone who will treat you more than a social director for networking. And, the bonus is if I get you hooked up, I can strut my stuff. “ “I’m sorry, Jackie. I hadn’t realized I was crowding your finding someone.” “Are you kidding? I don’t need to work it. I am hot and they flock to me with one smile and a look.” Sydney laughed, “both women and men unfortunately. I feel like second fiddle when we show up for the black tie dinner the last day of the events. I get it and I will brush up on my swallowing technique, for shots that is.” “My professional style is more classic style of mix Kate Hepburn/Audrey Hepburn.” Sydney stuck her tongue at Jackie. Sydney turned off the overhead light knowing that the little sleep they got on the plane would have be their base energy for a few weeks being fueled by caffeine and cat naps the rest of the time. *************** Jackie stood on the roof overlooking the Miami scene. She leaned over the railing of the rooftop pool area and looked down and almost threw up. Backing from the edge slowly she looked at Sydney wide-eyed. “Once again, how the hell did I let you talk me into this? I HATE heights. I am not going over that, we’re clear on that, right?” Sydney rolled out the rope and harness for a last check of the equipment. “You love our adventures, we never come to real harm and yes, we’re clear that you’re spotting me.” “Uh, you body surfing down the rapids after your inner tube got speared is as close as I wanted to seeing a friend die in front of me, genius!” Sydney looked up and nodded off handedly, “yea, that was wild but I didn’t get hurt and won’t this time. Ted leant me his equipment and gave me a quick lesson.” “Ted?! Did you say, Ted?!! That’s it. I’m not letting you fling yourself over the side of the building. Not while I’m here.” “It’s called repelling and I don’t think it’s very difficult. I’ve checked and made sure there’s no breeze this evening and the building next door shields from any unexpected gust. We have 4 hours for me to get down there and check to see if that eccentric doctor has holed himself up in a drinking spree and we’ll know how to proceed from there.” “And you’re sure we couldn’t get in his door. Pick it or something? What about the staff? And how do you even know what window to look into?” Jackie shook her head as if still trying to figure out why they were standing on a roof in Miami when she could be back in her home in DC sleeping. “It’s a secure building and apparently he is wealthy enough that he put special locks on his doors and the staff dislike him enough that a small bribe is all it took to get the later information of where his bedroom is located.” Sydney smiled, eye brows raised daring her to point out another question to her logic. “I know this is extreme but this guy leads a wild life, extreme situations call for extreme measures. He’s a specialist and the top in his field and I need to get him back to San Antonio by next week, preferably sober. And I think the 20 I slipped the guy at the door gave us all the information we’re going to need to get in and out and back to DC and not have to fly directly to Texas.” “Wait. Did you say you bribed that guy with a 20?” Jackie looked at Sydney as if she were going to slap her on the back of the head. “She’s right, Sydney. A twenty will barely buy you a drink in this city.” Both women jumped and turned to the disembodied voice. As he walked toward them the moon light played over the features in his face and they let out a collective sigh. “Derek!,” Jackie said, clearly happy to see him there. “Derek?,” Sydney asked with a frown. Derek ruffled Jackie’s hair preparing for the belt in the stomach he’d receive. “Good to see you too, Sunshine.” He said walking toward Sydney and removing the harness and rope from her hands looking at it as if inspecting its safety. “How did you know and why are you in TX?,” Sydney was trying to take back the harness from his grip. “Thank God you’re here,” Jackie said clearly in a much better mood than minutes ago. “I overheard Ted bragging how brave you were to go repelling for first time on a building at night and assured the guys he gave you adequate instructions. I fired him then took the evening flight here apparently in the nick of time. If anyone’s going over the side of this building, I am. And Jackie’s right. $20 dollars worth of bribing doesn’t guarantee you solid intel. I couldn’t get a blow job for that amount in this city. Wow, ladies I am so sorry. I was around the guys training this week and . . . “ Jackie laughed, “Apology accepted and you could get a BJ from Syd for free at this point. Our agreement, I do this crazy thing and Syd goes on vacation for a week in lustful island paradise.” Sydney looked at Jackie as if she’d lost her mind speaking freely and so out of character with regards to personal divulgence. “Whatever,” not being able to look Derek in the face and a bit abashed at the situation in its entirety, “I’m going down because this is gauged to hold my body index. Your presence is appreciated and admittedly we’ll probably need you more than we thought we would.” Derek smiled at Sydney and with one finger pulled her face up making her look at him, “I am amazed at your lack of judgment on this but understand all too clearly the motivational driving reasons. I wouldn’t want to fall out of favor with your boss either. Hell, my boss dislikes delivering bad news to her. And, if I didn’t think of myself as your guardian, Sunshine, I would help you go down on a lot of things, Sydney.” “Great, now I have both of you reminding me of my inactive sex life.” Sydney smiled back relieved she had not fallen into too much disfavor with Derek. He was the commander of the security detail and they all worked closely preparing for expo events. He was well-respected and quite often kept the VIPs out of trouble or at least out of the headlines. “I am so sorry you had to come after us. I guess this is a bit extreme.” “Not a problem. Just a change of layovers. You two will owe me a beer or I will take my payment in form of reclaiming story telling rights to first time we all met. You running down hall in Bullwinkle pjs and koala bear slippers and Jackie with mud mask and poor Ray in sleeping gown following close at heals past the Presidential Suite at 2am. “It was for an impromptu meeting over some VIPs arriving unexpectedly and their suites weren’t unoccupied yet. And you promised.” “Ahh, rules, rules ladies. I can be a rule breaker if it’s not about business.” Okay, okay. Deal but let’s get this over with. I’m getting nervous about this now and Jackie hates heights. Help me get the gear prepared and spot me. Jackie looked at Derek with a wry expression, “thought you, if anyone could talk her out of this.” Derek winked at Jackie who was appreciative of his charms though unaffected. “Relax, you know I wouldn’t let her do something that dangerous. She’s my lucky charm and I'm not ready to lose her nor answer to the boss how we lost the lead to his creative and corporate relations departments. And, before I hear anymore, I am willing to go splash water on this jackass that caused you guys to break from planning mode this close to chase him down. You two are too reliable to just disappear after a simple speaker.” Sydney sighed leaning against the railing. She shook her head, “we’ve got some important VIPs from overseas and this guy is our lead speaker and MC during the Black Tie evening. We can’t afford to lose those contracts, too many people’s jobs rely on getting any contracts these days much less ones of this caliber.” “I figured as much. Cheri indicated she was not upset by you two being MIA. That should have tipped me off before overhearing Ted’s story.” “Maybe you’ll be more lenient on Ted knowing how desperate we were,” Jackie said head tilted. Derek’s jaw tightened and when he spoke it was through clenched teeth, “I don’t tolerate placing someone in danger no matter the reason. That’s not the type of person I want on my team and you two are more like family and that I definitely don’t tolerate. However, I will look into helping him find new employment. “ Derek looked over the side of the building. “This scenario is going to give me nightmares, Sunshine but I no one can say you don’t have balls.” “Let’s get this gear back into the bag and I’ll teach you gals another skill you have no business knowing. Lock Picking 101.” “I got it!,” Jackie squealed backing up. “Now officially I am just as culpable in our little caper.” “Fabulous. Derek, you are going to teach me to perfect that later.” “Sure. Over those beers you two are going to owe me.”Sydney pushed the door opened and it swung and hit the wall. They all cringed. “Well, stealth is not going to be the trademark of this operation. Let’s hope the ol guy is deaf,” Derek lightly pushed Sydney following close behind.
Sydney quickly tip-toed down the hall. As the condo had an open layout there were only two doors and assuming the first was a bathroom, she headed toward the last one. “Element of surprise, right” And Sydney rushed through the door just pulling up short of the entry. Derek ran full force into Sydney propelling her forward. With Derek’s training and the moon shedding just enough light he could see where Sydney landed. “Ahh shit. With you gals it’s never a dull moment.” Jackie pushed Derek away and looked around him in the dark room. “What the hell?” Where’s she go?” She hadn’t uttered a sound but had landed on the overstuffed quilt of some man who lay naked with the covers flung off. Sydney couldn’t stop staring. Had it been so long since she’d seen such a perfect specimen of a man? Could he even be called just a man? She worked beside some of the top trained men in the world several times a year so she could appreciate the body of someone who obviously took well care to be fit. However it had been even longer since she’d seen a man in that state, and she had refused to go to that recent movie released that had all the women at the office wondering how much of a jolt they could give their own love lives. She hated window shopping. Her feeling was that if you couldn’t buy it or take it home, it was an exercise in futility. The Adonis had cooperated so far and obviously was a sound sleeper but she didn’t want to push her luck. Tearing her eyes reluctantly away from his body glistening from the heat outside and whatever raging body heat he produced. That was a mistake because that thought led to wondering how it would feel to lie naked up against all that smooth well-toned skin absorbing his heat, late balmy nights or winter. She slowly backed off the quilt making sure not to wake him when she finally glanced at face once more with a sigh which caught in her mouth as she realized his eyes were open in a sleepy sort of confusion? As his eyes started to focus and he took in her gear, he leapt from the bed grabbing a gun out of the nightstand. Derek tensed about to pounce “Crap, Syd.” His concerned eased as his eyes looked from the gun in the good doctor’s hands to his eyes. When he realized they weren’t in immediate threat he relaxed. “Krucifix?” He didn’t point the gun at her which sort of pissed her off as he didn’t see her as a credible threat. He did however keep an eye on the large male in his room. “Okay, I know that phrase because of a pen pal I used to write from that country but beyond a few words, I can’t communicate.” “Here’s an easy one. What the hell are you doing in my bedroom other than for what appears as you playing at being a cat burglar?” Although he spoke without any seeming accent, Sydney could still tell that English was a second language for this, uhh, her eyes strayed to his raging hard-on and she’d lost all brain activity. “Huh?” She stuttered unintelligently. With his other hand he gestured to his eyes. “Up here, I’m flattered by your attention, I’m sure you’ve seen one before. I’m more concerned with who you are and why you’re breaking into my condo. “ He grabbed his robe off the back of a chair and putting the gun down, wrapped himself. His putting the gun down snapped Sydney out of her trance-like state. “Not like that.” Then realizing he once again hadn’t found her intrusion a threat put her hands on her hips, “misunderstanding. I was supposed to be breaking in on my fiancé’s bachelor party. So, if you’ll just excuse me, I will be on my way.” “I don’t think so. I happen to know all the events held in this building and no one is even near to being engaged. Especially to someone as bourgeois as yourselves. Try again, Sladke’. Make it good, if I’m not amused enough, I call the cops. You obviously aren’t a cat burglar. Few come complete with their own bodyguards.” Sydney raised her eyebrows sheepishly, “he’s not my bodyguard and she’s my friend. She’s more of a cohort and he’s here to keep me from getting myself into trouble.” “That was a glowing recommendation of a near impossible task. You’re going to owe me more than a beer,” Derek murmured behind her. “We’ll take you on our vacation. I have a feeling we’re going to need you,” Jackie whispered eyeing the gun. “You’re not very good friends with the man one flight below, Sladke’, because he’s left the country for several months. You would have known that if you’d asked downstairs.” “They didn’t know or wouldn’t tell and apparently $20 doesn’t buy very reliable intel.” “$20 won’t even buy you a discreet or indiscreet service,” he looked at her now from head to toe as if scanning her. “Yes, I’ve been told this recently. So, if you don’t mind, as much as I’d love to get to know you so very much more, Mr. . . . uhh? You’re name?” “It’s Dr.Ivan Rusilko and you really should be the one giving me your name,” he leaned and flipped a switch turning on light from a very expensive light fixture overhead. He looked her over again with a slightly twisted smile. “Is this your first attempt at cat burglaring?” Sydney could only guess how they appeared to this man. Derek was dressed in his usual all-black and skull cap. At a little over 6-feet, and with his dark complexion often made people uncomfortable outside their city. She’d assumed Jackie and she could purchase some outgear from a sports store but Miami apparently catered to the minimalist attitude in all apparel. She wore a pair of skin tight black yoga spandex pants with a tight jogging bra which at the moment still revealed lingering appreciation of seeing this very tall dark haired, dark-eyed, tanned, very naked man. Although pulled back in a low ponytail, her abundant curly dark hair would have obviously made her look a bit like a wild child. Derek would sometimes call her feral when she was taken by surprise because even in a suit and pair of heals, between her long unruly curly hair and her wide-eyed hazel doe eyed look when they weren’t squinted in a smile, she looked prepared to bolt or charge head long. No midways with this one. “I drink pineapple juice.” She blurted. “I’m sorry, what?” As if he could get any more handsome, his face became a radiant reflection of his broad wide grin showing perfect teeth. Sydney shook her head. Even she was amazed at that random outburst. “Never mind. I’ve no idea where that came from. Are you going to let me walk out of this with some dignity in tact? I made a huge miscalculation and I’m starting to be sorry we didn’t check our information better. This was sort of last minute. Let me just leave and you will never see me again.” “Why do I feel that I would be the one to regret that? But if you must.” He smiled at her with a sly grin. “I’m glad I am amusing.” Sydney turned to Derek and Jackie, “let’s get the hell out of here before he changes his mind.” “Next time you should choose a boyfriend who would not allow you to be placed in such circumstances.” “Excuse me?,” both Jackie and Sydney turned to the previously naked man. “Allow?” “He obviously doesn’t know you and ‘allow’ shouldn’t be used in the same sentence, Sunshine. And no offense, but I like my women a bit more obedient and a lot more sexed.” “Dear God, let the earth swallow me up. Did this man have to know that detail? Let’s try to leave with some dignity.” They all trooped through the apartment and out the door and toward the elevator. Sydney stopped and turned back at the door and looked at the doctor with a smile, “thank you Dr. Rusilko. You had every right to call the authorities and even though we could have gotten out of the charges, it would have been very embarrassing. We needed Dr. Childers to give a speech on physical training for tactical preparation and that is not going to happen. I don’t suppose you know that subject?” “No, I’m sorry, Sladke’. Please, call me Dr. Ivan or, better yet, Ivan.” He reached out his hand and brushed his fingertips along her face and tipped her jaw up looking into her eyes. He smiled almost wistfully and winked at her. “I am a doctor of women’s sexual health and Osteopathy.” Jackie bellowed out a laugh, “Perhaps she could use you doc in a few weeks in the tropics.” Sydney blushed feeling the heat sweep her face. She stepped back and thanked him again. As they rode the elevator down, Derek shrugged, “well, that could have gone worse.” “We’re screwed,” Jackie said clenching her teeth and pushed the Lobby button again. “The prick called us bourgeois!” Sydney sneered. “Speak for yourself, pale face,” Jackie said. “I think he was referring to all of us and I don’t recall you being enraged when he said it,” Derek chuckled at Sydney. “My mind was still fixated on his ass-ets as he put his robe on,” Sydney looked down blushing madly. “I think your timing of event sequence is off,” Jackie suddenly turned toward Sydney. “You liked him! I mean aside from the whole naked thing.” “One cannot like someone without knowing them. Speaking strictly from a detached observation, he seemed educated and very handsome and well-spoken.” “You’re horny and he was obviously attractive to you,” Derek said smiling at her with raised eyebrows. “Something tells me we’ll be hearing from our doctor in some capacity if his integrity is anything that I judged it to be.” “What does that mean?” Jackie tossed the keys to their rental car to Derek. “I may have left a calling card of sorts,” he said raising his hands in defense. “I could be wrong but you were the one who wanted a romantic tryst in the tropics.” “I don’t do one-night stands.” At Derek’s raised eyebrows Sydney amended. “Anymore. You know too damn much about us.” “Sweet car. Sydney, you’re choice?” Derek held the bucket seat forward so Sydney could climb into the back of the Mustang. “You betcha. I’m strictly trucks,” Jackie slid over the door and into the seat of the convertible. “If we were going to be this close to the beach, I wanted something of a perk. Convertible Mustang seemed right.” Sydney settled back looking up towards the cloudless night and smiled for the first time that night. Without conscious thought, she wondered what it would have been like to lick the underside of the doctor’s member standing clearly at more attention than him being started from bed. She thought to last night at the bar when she took with no problem the entire length of the longneck Bud at Jackie’s teasing dare of practice making perfect. Suddenly she was very thirsty. “Open her up, Derek. I feel the need.” “The need for speed!” All three chorused laughing as Derek sped them toward the airport.(they leave, all but Derek, not realizing that the bag with the gear Ted had loaned them had the companies’ logo on it and was still sitting inside the apartment behind the door.) Dr. Ivan sees it later and intrigued, contacts the company and recalling their names, speaks to Derek’s boss offering to speak in TX. As a body builder, nutritionist and 2-time Mr. USA, his qualifications were more than adequate in how to prepare an ex-navy seal or any post-military soldier for a diet and exercise regime to keep in top form. While in TX, there were a few colleagues he hadn’t seen in a while so the expense of the trip could be rationalized between their speaker fee and his own business travel expenses. He was used to speaking for a larger fee but this would be interesting at most and something to add to his client resume at very least. Sydney could prove to be that light he needed to make sense of things which had become like a train wreck waiting to happen if he didn’t slow down or reassess some things. With a slow smile embracing his face, he wonders what his cousin Alexei is doing next week?
